Cheatin never sounded so good.
Man, I just got done listening to "Agony and the Extacy" by Smokey Robinson. That song is the pure, unadulterated, shit. A cheatin' asshole song, true enough. But he made me understand it, feel it, and forgive it. I haven't heard it since the late 90's, and I forgot how much I loved that song. I remember when I would listen to it back in 1994 (damn everything seemed to go down in 1994). Me and my Negro of the Moment would be on the phone, choppin it up about nothing before my phone curfew would kick in, causing moms to snatch the cord outta the wall if I didn't comply. My dubbed-off-the-radio mixtape of Kevin "Slo Jammin" James' style oldies from the Sunday Night Love Affair would be playin on the old ass cassette player I had. I'd spend most of the conversation kicking Junior up outta my room, yellin at him to hang up the other phone and quit ear husslin, and the rest of it giggling at whatever the dude was saying. I was so damn goofy back then. Its a wonder I ever had a boyfriend prior to 1996. Smokey, LoKey (I Got A Thang For Ya was my cut), Portrait and Shai amongst the dependable standbys the Isleys (what you know about "Let's Fall In Love"?), Chi-Lites and Temptations were in constant and heavy rotation. Pixie Stix, Red Vines, and Sour Powers were the menu along with Lemonheads, Cactus Cooler, and Cherry Clans (NO, they are NOT Cherry Heads. Don't believe the hype.. Ferrera Pan caved to PC pressure. Them shits had slanted eyes and those bamboo hats on the box). Ahh. Good times. It was one dude, for the sake of anonymity (is that how you spell that shit? College graduate my ass) I'll call PJ. PJ was a high school senior when I was in 9th grade. I went to the ultimate nerd school, LACES. So basically you could go there from 5th grade to 12th. Thats when I was all super dope speaking fluent Japanese and German for the hell of it. Anyway, back to my nerddom on the bus. I didn't even know who he was until I was forced to ride the school bus. Then the evil ass bus driver decided to put the loud kids up front and moved us band nerds (1st chair clarinet, represent!) to the back of the bus. Who got to stay back there but PJ. Who did he decide to sit next to but me. 12th row, left hand side, I was on the window he had the aisle. He played varsity basketball for our lame ass team. First tall man I ever encountered up close in person. First senior that decided to be my friend. First for a lot of shit. PJ was the first dude to actually feel me up, lol. Now that I think about it, he was a serious perv taking advantage of li'l old me. But you couldn't have convinced me of that. I was ultra stupid. I had a "bond" with PJ. *sigh* Damn I was an idiot, LOL. I remember thinking how I'd get my ass kicked if my momma ever found out what I was doing on that bus. He was technically guilty of carnal knowledge of a minor since he was 18, but you know my happy ass wasn't snitching on him. I even had a 15 year old (I was 14) boyfriend at the time, and I dumped him so I wouldn't feel guilty about messing with PJ. I remember I first started wearing booty shorts back then and these little white shoes called Keds... it was a universal fad at that nerd school. White chicks, Black chicks, Latinas, all of us were decked out in our keds and booty shorts. For once, I was no exception. I don't even remember how I got moms to loosen the Iron Fist of Imperial Opression, but she did. I had my cross colors shirt and my blue booty shorts on that day. With them damn keds. And an ankle bracelet, which he kept. I wonder does he still have it. He was the one who first told me I had pretty legs. All of my stalkers need to thank PJ, because if it wasn't for him I'd never have worn the short skirts and even shorter shorts that have become my uniform for July. Agony and the Extacy was my song for PJ. He didn't know as much about oldies as I did, so I taught him a lot. We kept in touch until I graduated from King-Drew medical magnet. He knew about the bad stuff that happened to me, and the good stuff. We kinda developed a more mature friendship over time... after I didn't like him anymore, LOL. But he was a good friend to me. He went into the Air Force in 1997 and I completely lost contact with him. I hadn't thought about him in years. I hope he's okay. Shit, lemme get back to work.
